Chapter Nine

Now that the ragged edge of need had been removed, he could think more clearly. Ben had always hated coming home, but today the dread had been particularly worse than before.

Doubtless, it was due to this entire situation of knowing a predator hunted victims from his dungeon, of feeling helpless. Victimized. Of seeing that poor girl, Dru, rendered mute by the things the man had done to her.

It infuriated him. And every day the man remained at large, it enraged Ben even more.

As angry and frustrated as he found himself in his current circumstances, as much admiration filled him for Jessamine’s courage. For her selfless determination to avenge her sister.

For her unquestioning trust.

She’d borne the brunt of his demands without reservation. Her submission had quelled his anxiety, had released him from a fragment of his torment.

Sweet Jessamine.

Even now, as she sat in the bed, clutching the quilt over the swell of her breasts, he could see that her heart raced like a hare’s that was caught in a trap. Her brown eyes glistened like smoky quartz gemstones. Unspoken expectation lurked in her gaze, in her parted, swollen lips.

He reached up and brushed his thumb across the faint bruise on her bottom lip.

The sudden, surprising urge to drag her down to him, kiss her again, to move over her and sink his cock into her, welled within him. He’d never before disciplined a woman he was so determined to have. Perhaps because he could have had them if he’d wanted to.

He could have Jessamine. The knowledge rattled him to the core.

No. He wouldn’t do that to her.

The proverbial devil on his shoulder whispered, “Why not?” She clearly wanted to. She had no suitors, no courtships.

“What is it that I will need to know, my lord?” she asked, drawing him out of his reverie.

He stared at her for a moment, reminding himself that his intention was to scare her into giving up this ridiculous scheme. Even if he could have withstood the idea of her in peril, the very thought of her submitting to another man was unthinkable. No. It was time to plant the first seeds of doubt in her mind. “I don’t think I can get you ready for it,” he muttered.

Her eyes narrowed with determination. Her chin lifted. “What did I not do that you asked of me?”

Her innocence warmed his heart. “Pet, I barely touched upon what would be required of you.”

He sat and reached for her but she swatted his hand. “Tell me what is required then and allow me to decide for myself.”

“Did you not see the room from which I so recently carried you?” He pointed toward the door.

Defiance sparked in her eyes. “Don’t patronize me, Lord Lashwood. I know very well why I am here. We have no time for this…this shillyshally.” She threw off the quilt, climbed down from the bed and started toward the playroom.

He gaped. He’d spanked her to the point of bruising her and then had fucked her luscious
